LECTURES, SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS
The Centre’s Library has a rich collection of books, back volumes and reports numbering more than 33,000. It offers a wide range of material to those interested in the area of social sciences with a particular focus on Gujarati society. Besides catering to the Centre’s research requirements and programmes, the library makes available its resources and services to the neighbouring academic community from the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) as well as those coming from within and outside Gujarat. Researchers from other institutions duly authorized by their respective librarians can utilize the facilities of CSS library.
There are, in addition, longer seminars and workshops around specific themes which began to be organised since 1980 after the Centre moved into its own building and space ceased to be a problem. In fact, the Centre's own building was inaugurated with a seminar on - appropriately enough for the year 1980 - `Challenges for the 1980s'. Thus began an uninterrupted process of collective academic discussion on themes which reveal the range of the Centre's concerns. The proceedings of some of these seminars have been brought out in book form in English and Gujarati.
Attended by concerned scholars, activists, writers, artists, policy makers and others, these seminars and workshops have been on the following subjects:

• Decentralisation: two successive seminars in 1981 and 1982.

• Panchayati Raj and Scheduled Castes: in collaboration with the National Institute of Public
